Adding an extra O to Google

6 October 2006 367 views No Comment

The statement Perfection cannot be improved is void. It is true provided a particular phenomenon/subject had attained perfection, which is virtually never possible. I personally believe, it is useless to reach the state of perfection but the journey to be become one makes life interesting.

I have been one among the herds as far as searching the web is concerned, glued to Google since the last few years and have never bothered to use any other search engines except for Teoma for a while as there was too much hype on its ‘Expert Rank’ approach a couple of years ago.

The success of google is primarily due to the strength of the offerings and they way it was promoted to the users. Importantly, Google has been quite receptive to ideas for the user community - one of my good friend’s buddy had made a recommendation to google’s mail service, it was validated, accepted  and subsequently bundled quite smoothly.

I am trying to add an extra “O” to Google by the following not-so-astronomical suggestion for search homepage

Hypotheses
We do not have to be stuck with 3-Click to Destination approach as far as usability for search engines are concerned.

Depending on the basic user information stored in cookies, without having to logon to personalized page, a certain elements of the regular homepage can be customized basis the information stored in the cookie. I am keen on reorganizing/personalizing the hyperlinks above the search box. Why? Easy Access.

Tactic

Read the cookie file and reorganize the hyperlinks above the search text box in google. For me, please keep the following and move News, Group under the More link

  • Images
  • Blog Search
  • Web
  • Desktop

Potential Value

I get to save a few minutes (particularly, when I am connected to the net via my Data Card or GPRS) on homepage load time. I personally do not use Google for News and NewsGroups – So, having these links on the entry page is meaningless to me. And, reorganizing these links basis the cookie stored in the local machine would reduce time, thus increased loyalty cum comfort cum usage..
