First iPhone then iLawsuit

The much awaited cellular phone from Apple Inc. is finally out. Steve Jobs had unveiled iPhone in Macworld expo yesterday. Though the features and functionalities of the product would remain as promised, the name might not.

InfoGear, an IT/Communication company that was acquired by Cisco systems over half-a-decade ago registered iPhone trademark way back in late 90s. After the acquisition, Linksys, division of Cisco has enhanced the hardware and today its iPhone supports Skype directly.

Apple has been pursuing Cisco since the beginning of 2001 to gain rights over the brandname, but the attempt remained futile in the past. As a recent development Cisco was believed to be agreeing to share the brand name with Apple for its new product. But, Steve being Steve did not wait till the dotted-line was signed and went ahead with the product release. Again Steve being Steve, would have planned his 2007 Budget for a lawsuit as well.

Result, Cisco Sues Apple for Trademark Infringement. Lets wait for the next few weeks (or worse a month) and see if Apple manages to hold its “I” quotient.
